When Nick Dill made his first trip to Alva to see Northwestern, he had no idea what to expect.
“The first time I came up here, the first thing I saw was the hitchhiker and prison sign and I thought that was interesting,” Dill said. “I also remember going to the square and seeing a stoplight that has one circle on it and asking my dad about where the other two circles are.”
After a few more visits to Alva, Dill knew that this was the place that he wanted to be at. Over the next four years, Dill transitioned from living in The Colony, Texas, a Dallas suburb, to living in a town with 38,000 less people.
This did not bother Dill, as he went on to have several roles on campus, in addition to being the kicker for the Ranger football team. Dill is a mass communication major, and is involved in the Northwestern News, student government, NWTV-7 and is a student worker in the recruitment office.
Dill is also a member of the student-athlete advisory committee as the representative for the Great American Conference. His role is to represent student athletes for all 12 schools in the GAC and to notify the NCAA about concerns student athletes may have.
Dill has had many memories as a Ranger, and his favorite one involving the football team would be when he made two field goals in the last three minutes of the game to beat Southwestern on November 13. This gave the Rangers their second win of the year, and was the fourth consecutive win for the Rangers over the Bulldogs.
Dill will graduate on Sunday, but had some advice for students at Northwestern.
“What you put into Northwestern is what you are going to get out of Northwestern,” Dill said. “If you are optimistic about Northwestern and why people choose to come here, you’re going to have a lot better experience here.”
